In recent years, the Household Support Fund has underpinned local authority assistance programmes across England, helping vulnerable households meet essential costs such as food, energy and utilities.
From 1 April 2026, the Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF) replaced the Household Support Fund. Both funds support people facing an emergency, but the CRF places greater emphasis on preventative support that helps people become more financially secure and better able to withstand future financial shocks.
Against this changing backdrop, WVFB’s trustees have agreed that the charity will transition to become a CRF-aligned resilience partner as its preferred strategic direction. The decision marks an important next step in WVFB’s work to prevent and relieve poverty and financial hardship.
A phased transition will strengthen crisis support, advice, referrals and prevention while protecting emergency food provision.
Work is now underway enhance referral pathways, links to advice and support services, partnership working, data and case-management systems, and activity designed to reduce repeat crises.
What this means
Emergency food provision will continue for people in acute need.
The aim is not to withdraw food support, but to place it within a broader model:
food where needed, advice where possible, and prevention wherever achievable.

Wansbeck Valley Food Bank are now the proud owners of a new Ford Transit van generously, part funded by The Joicey Trust, a local charity benefactor.
This new addition to our fleet replaces two older vehicles, ensuring that the Food Bank can continue its vital work with greater reliability and lower running costs.
This upgrade means that the Food Bank can respond quickly and reliably to the needs of the community, ensuring that no one goes hungry.
A larger van will also enable the food bank to save on food costs by allowing bulk purchases from local suppliers and will be vital for larger collections of food during the busy periods of Harvest Festival and Christmas.
This generous gesture from The Joicey Trust will make a significant difference in the lives of many, bringing hope and security to those who need it most.
